Breast Augmentation Considerations

When considering breast augmentation, there are several factors to think about. During your consultation in our Vancouver office, Dr. Seal will initially focus on understanding your individual concerns and goals, and then discuss what options exist to help address these.

Important factors to consider include:

  1. What type of implant is desired for breast enhancement?
  2. Where the incisions are made to allow the implants to be placed behind the breast.
  3. Where the implants are placed, either above the chest muscles, or below the chest muscles.
  4. What size implant will safely achieve the desired breast appearance?

1. IMPLANT TYPE
The first decision is whether to use silicone gel implants or saline implants. There are several different types of gel implants within the category of silicone gel implants, and Dr. Seal would be happy to discuss with you how all of these implants differ from each other, and what the benefits and considerations of each type are. In general, many women find that silicone gel implants have a more natural look and feel, compared with saline implants. Saline implants are essentially silicone shells filled with sterile salt water and can potentially be placed through smaller incisions.

2. INCISIONS
One of Dr. Seal’s goals for your breast augmentation is to make your incisions as unnoticeable as possible. The most popular incision site options include making the incision along the lower border of the areola (peri-areolar incision), where there is a natural color change from the areola pigment to the breast skin, or through a small incision in the breast crease, where the shape of the breast helps to cover this area. The implant type and size, and your breast size and shape, can influence which method may be best suited for you, and Dr. Seal would be happy to discuss this with you to help you make the right choice for your individual goals.

3. PLACEMENT
The breast implants can be placed either directly behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscles. Part of this decision depends on the aesthetic goals you may have for your breasts and your starting breast size. Placing the implants directly below the muscle provides more coverage over the upper portion of the implant. This can potentially create a more natural breast appearance. There is a spectrum of looks that can be achieved, from a natural breast appearance to a very augmented look to the breast. One of the main goals during your consultation is to determine where you feel your ideal breast appearance is on this spectrum. Depending on your goals, both techniques of implant placement can be used with different sizes and shaped implants to help achieve your desired appearance, and Dr. Seal would be happy to discuss the details with you.

4. IMPLANT SIZE
The size of the implants for your breast enhancement is one of the most important and exciting decisions for you to make. Your ideal breast size, shape, and appearance is a very personal decision, and through your consultation, one of our focuses is to provide you with a safe range of implant sizes that would be compatible with your chest and body proportions. As part of your consultation, with the use of sizers and a custom sizing bra, you can visualize in the office how the different size implants will augment your breast appearance, and help ensure you achieve the beautiful look you desire.

What to expect during your recovery

Breast Augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure at a private surgical facility. You will be able to go home after the procedure to relax and recover. In general, most women recover well over the first week, and we provide you with all the medication and supplies to help you through this process. When thinking about time off work, or away from social commitments, 2 weeks is most likely a safer window of downtime. You will have some comfort garments provided to help you through the recovery period and ensure optimal implant position. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks. Dr. Seal will see you in the office over the recovery period to review all the important information with you and ensure that you are doing well. The final results can appear gradually over the first few months as the implants settle into the correct position and the swelling subsides. The incisions continue to fade over the first year, and all the important things you can do to help optimize your results are reviewed during your follow-up visits.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Your consultation in Vancouver will provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about breast augmentation so that Dr. Seal can answer them. Dr. Seal will also ask about what your goals are for your procedure and go over the breast implant options we offer.
There are saline breast implants, silicone breast implants, and cohesive gel silicone implants. There are also various sizes, shapes, and textures that these implants come in. Dr. Seal will recommend the best option for you during your consultation in Vancouver.
There are various incision locations that can be used to perform a breast augmentation. Extreme care and precision are used when making these incisions so that they heal well or are well hidden within the natural creases of the breasts so that any scarring or post-surgical marks are not easy to detect.
The recovery length will vary from patient to patient. If your job is not physically demanding you may be able to resume work sooner than others, but most patients will want to take around two weeks off to recover. Exercise and other strenuous activities will need to be avoided for three weeks or so.
Breast augmentation should provide results that are long-lasting. However, there may be cases where an implant rupture occurs due to wear and tear or because of damage to the breast implant. In these cases, the implant will need to be replaced through an additional procedure. Breast implants can also be removed if the patient no longer desired them.
